We were born in the arcade glow of the late 1980s. Back then, gaming wasn’t just a pastime—it was a revelation. Remember these Titles like Street Fighter, Metroid, and Final Fantasy transformed screens into spaces of escape and imagination. We were Inspired by those and Video Game Play started as a grassroots zine circulated among hobbyists, blending early game reviews with indie comic panels and cel animation breakdowns.
Origins: The Arcade Spark
In the vivid pulse of pixelated battles and hand-drawn heroes, Video Game Play has thrived for more than three decades—an enduring cultural node where comic artistry, gaming innovation, and animated storytelling collide. Our legacy isn’t just measured in years—it’s drawn in passion, framed in fandom, and coded with creative resilience.
From the beginning, we’ve believed in the power of narrative frames. Our comics archive showcases over 1,000 original stories inspired by game worlds and cultural shifts. These weren’t just fan creations—they were interpretive art, commenting and watching the ethics of war in Metal Gear, the isolation of Silent Hill, and the surrealism of titles like Katamari Damacy. Our artists were inspired and learned to fused manga styles with Western storytelling, creating a hybrid voice that spoke to a global audience.
Animation became our heartbeat in the mid-1990s, when digital art tools allowed creatives to bring their visions to life. We hosted some of the earliest workshops on Flash animation, and by the 2000s were learning from the creators who’d go on to contribute to iconic series like Castlevania, Avatar: The Last Airbender, and indie hits like Cuphead. Today, our animation arm fuels emotionally resonant stories that bridge the personal and fantastical—memory, grief, connection—all in motion. Thank you to those who pioneered the frontline!
Across consoles, PCs, handhelds, and mobile screens, we’ve grown alongside the industry. As gaming matured from pixel art to photorealism, we stayed rooted in storytelling. Our critique and celebration of games has never just been about tech—it’s been about what games mean. From uncovering queer allegory in The Legend of Zelda, to examining mental health in Celeste, we’ve always framed play as purpose.
